Mykonos Areas | Megali Ammos
Megali Ammos is just 2 km from Mykonos Town and Little Venice - her name means “Large Sand”, and it is quite an understatement. Her vistas of golden sands and azure waters “forged” the reputation that brought the first tourists to the island, building the legacy of eternal summertime Mykonos. The name of the village originated from the sand that reached the base of the hills, before even the roads were built. It is a beach without umbrellas and sunbeds, due to the fact that there are very strong northerly winds, making her suitable for windsurfing, sea sports of every variety, as well as scuba diving.
Location
In Megali Ammos you will encounter a great deal of small local restaurants and picturesque, cute coffee shops at the edge of the sea. Enjoy fresh, delicious octopus soaked in vinegar and wash it down with amber wine. The beach herself is an excellent place to take a quiet stroll away from the crowds - if you're into the zephyrs and windy climates, of course - while gazing at the sunset. Historically, in times of war, this beach had been used to bring essential goods from other islands to the black market, and one such story speaks about the ghost of a pirate named Kapetanakis, whose spirit haunted the beach. But fear not, the story was made up to keep the locals off the beach at night so the goods could be unloaded from the boats - you are totally safe!
