Mykonos Areas | Agia Sofia
Mykonos is synonymous with vibrant and neverending nightlife, the eternal Greek summer and decadent parties. Of course, this is but one side of the coin, as this cycladic wonder is also home to majestic natural landscapes, vivid, colorful marine vistas and places of historic and sanctic significance that evoke feelings of terrible awe and grandeur within visitors from every corner of the world.
Location
Indeed, Mykonos has many churches and chapels. Their total number exceeds 600 throughout the island. Most impressive in construction is the famous and much-photographed Panagia Paraportiani, a complex of five beautifully constructed churches. Another jewel is Panagia Tourliani, which was built in 1542 century by two hieromonks of the monastery of Ekatontapiliani of Paros, as mentioned by the inscription of the miraculous icon of the same era. Not being quite so profoundly famous or large is Agia Sofia in the namesake area, which possesses yet a deceptively captivating quality of serene harmony and piety which transfixes one’s imagination and fills him/her with awe.
It stands in a small yet quite fairytale-like neighborhood, complete with its own bakery and local taverns, a slice of Mykonos that remains unhindered by the bustling beating heart of its city center.
